Music with Stuart

We knew Stuart through two avenues: He was always ordering the most interesting recordings from Grass Roots. For some reason, most of what he was interested in was often out of print, but always exotic and interesting, and usually of international flavor. We remember that he always took the time to tell us why the particular recording was so great, with a thoughtful little story about it. It was always a heads up: pay attention to this, if Stuart likes it, it's most likely fabulous! He was also very patient waiting for us to procure some of his hard to find requests. We knew him as a very gentle and kind customer. The more personal connection was the opportunity for me to join Stuart and mutual friends in a fundraising performance for the Heart of The Valley Children's Choir to help send them to China. It was really fun for me, and a lifetime memory to play with such a high caliber musician as Stuart. There was also a house party hosted by the Fridleys in Corvallis, where we first had the opportunity to hear Stuart up close and personal (Michael Fridley also arranged the fundraiser, and put us all together for that). After that, whenever I ran into Stuart, he always asked how my music was going, and was very encouraging and supportive. I'm a "folkie", so I really appreciated that since I had a great respect for his musicianship. Thank you for the opportunity to say these words about Stuart. He was part of what makes Corvallis the special place that it is. He will be missed by many. Sandy Smith and Jack Wolcott
